    The Endangered Species Act, which was passed in 1973, protects any species that is deemed endangered or threatened. Many local and state laws, in addition to international treaties, have also been enacted to protect the environment and its wildlife.

    How does the Endangered Species Act protect animals?
    Under this act, it is against the law to remove an endangered animal from the wild. In addition, animals that are categorized as endangered species cannot be sold, transported or owned. This act also sets aside land and other resources to protect endangered species.

    When does an animal become endangered or threatened?
    When an animal is near extinction, it is considered to be endangered. If an animal is likely to become endangered, then that species is identified as being threatened. Strict rules are observed when classifying a species as endangered.

    Which U.S. state has the most endangered species?
    Nearly every state has some endangered plants or animals. According to the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, Hawaii tops the list with 329 endangered species. Hawaii is closely followed by California, which has 309 endangered species.
